Summary: Q offers his brand of comfort to Jean-Luc in the wake of a tragedy.

~oOo~

Picard stared down at the corpse of the young ensign. He was laid out in sick bay, soon to be prepared for burial. He looked strangely alive lying there, as if he would awake at any moment. But that was an illusion, Picard thought bitterly. In truth, the lad was dead--and he was dead for no good reason.

The boy had not given his life in battle; he’d had no opportunity for such heroics. Instead, he’d been killed by an aneurysm that Dr. Crusher could not even account for. A freak occurrence, it seemed.

“Upsetting, isn’t it, mon capitaine?”

Spock stepped into the hotel, almost grateful for a haven from the bleak, oppressive rain outside. He did not waste time in the lobby, however, but went directly to the concierge for the number of Dr. McCoy's room. Then he made his way to the proper floor.

Summary: Adam has his hands full with a drunk and disorderly Little Joe in the aftermath of The Quality of Mercy

~

The barkeep eyed the youngest Cartwright wearily. “Don’t you think you’ve had enough, Little Joe?”

“I still got money in my pocket, Clem,” he answered in a drunken slur. “Enough for one more drink and one more girl—pour me `nother.”

Clem doubted that Joe could handle either a drink or a girl at the moment, but he complied anyway. Just as he set the drink on the bar Adam Cartwright strode into the saloon. Clem breathed a sigh of relief and sent him a pleading glance.

Holmes was resting in his bed. His heartbeat had returned to something approaching normal and his eyes, at a guess, were less bloodshot. It was difficult to tell, as he was keeping them resolutely shut.

“I am quite recovered, Watson,” he murmured, turning his head to the side as he sunk further into the pillows that I had propped up behind him. “Allow me to sleep—there’s a good fellow.”

“So how do you like Peter as a Dad?” El asked, clinking her beer bottle against Neal’s.

Neal grinned. “You’re not upset about that, are you?”

She laughed as she unscrewed the cap. They were sitting out on the front steps, enjoying the sunshine and all the commotion of the block party. Everything seemed perfect. Or almost perfect. She had this feeling in the back of her brain that Neal wasn't quite ok.

“What?” she asked, keeping her voice light and teasing. “Upset that you conned our whole block into thinking that Peter got some poor girl pregnant when he was a teenager?”

“In fairness I only conned your next door neighbor, Mrs. Murphy,” Neal corrected. “She did the rest.”

Spock entered sickbay with no visible emotion on his face, but internally he was dreading the visit. Such dread was illogical—but it would be even more so to lie to himself.

I stared at Holmes, feeling a fool as he wiped the vaseline from his forehead and the rouge from his cheeks. I had wanted to shout for joy when I first realised that he was feigning his illness—when I first realised that I would not, in fact, lose my friend. His ghastly appearance and feverish mutterings about oysters had been a calculated ruse to surprise a confession out of a villain. But however happy I was to know that Holmes was safe, I could not help but feel bitterly hurt.

~oOo~

What the hell possessed me to run off to Starfleet? I'm a doctor, not a space cadet. I ought to be settling into a lazy country practice, not learning how to operate during a simulated Klingon attack.

I shook my head as I walked into my apartment. Yes, I said apartment. One of the advantages of entering Starfleet Academy as a fully qualified surgeon is permission to lodge off campus. No wretched dorm for me. I had my own place.

Well, sort of. One glance into my bedroom revealed a lump on my bed. A James T. Kirk-sized lump, to be exact.

my LiveJournal.

~oOo~

The kid looked shell-shocked--that's the best way Peter could describe it.

It wasn't just the glaring orange prison suit that had replaced his customary elegant attire. It wasn't even the handcuffs that bound his wrists behind his back, in deference to his talent for sleight of hand. Nor was it the ankle cuffs to keep him from running.

No, it was the dazed, uncomprehending look in his eyes. It was the same look he'd been wearing since the judge pronounced his sentence.
